Bakewell Fizz Cocktail Recipe

Last Updated on May 13, 2024 by Jo

Prosecco screams celebration and when it comes to the winter months, especially with Thanksgiving and Christmas packed together, it’s time to pop some corks. If you want to serve something a little more than a simple glass of sparkling wine, try this Bakewell Fizz.

What is a Bakewell Fizz?

Bakewell Fizz is a 4-ingredient Prosecco cocktail that uses Disaronno amaretto, maraschino cherry liqueur and Prosecco. It’s a boozy take on the classic British Bakewell Tart, a sweet pie created by accident in the 1800s. The Bakewell Fizz, like the Bakewell Tart, is heavily flavoured with sweet cherry and almond. Prosecco, of course, offers the fizz and a softening of the sweet notes.

For me, it’s the perfect cocktail to bring out when you’re sitting by the fire * on a frosty evening, or at Christmas celebrations with friends and family. (* Hey, I don’t have a roaring real fire either, I just pop the Fireplace video from Netflix on my TV).

What type of Prosecco to use

Since the Bakewell Fizz already has a lot of sweetness to it, and since the Prosecco is a prominent part of the drink, I recommend using a Brut Prosecco. Brut is one of the drier/less sweet styles of Prosecco. However, if you do have a super-sweet tooth and want to sweeten this cocktail further, opt for Dry or Extra Dry Dry (the dry styles are actually sweeter than Brut in the crazy Italian wine classification system). If you can find it, search for a Brut DOCG as this is the most premium Prosecco commonly available. Otherwise, Brut DOC will be good enough. Check the back of the label for the DOC or DOCG designation if it’s not on the front. Read more: How to choose the best Prosecco.

Serving suggestions

What I love about this cocktail is that it’s a no-fuss, make-in-the-glass kind of cocktail. However, if you’re looking to level up your cocktail skills or want to make a few tweaks, try these suggestions:

  • If you have time, soak the maraschino cherries in the maraschino liqueur. Ideally, soak them overnight, but an hour or two will also be fine.
  • I don’t use ice in this cocktail – it’s a winter drink and ice dilutes and removes the sparkle of the Prosecco. If you want a cooler drink, chill the cherries and bottles of alcohol before preparing. If you want it much cooler, shake the maraschino liqueur and the Disaronno amaretto over ice before adding to the glass.
  • Whatever you do, don’t add ice to the finished drink. It’s a Prosecco killer in a drink where we want the fizz.
  • I’m a sucker for a Champagne flute or other elegant stemmed glasses and they work especially well for this cocktail where the cherry sits pretty at the bottom.
