Italy and Mexico – two nationalities whose cultures aren’t usually combined – but it certainly works when you add Prosecco to the classic margarita. In fact, it seems they’re a match made in cocktail heaven.
What is Prosecco Margarita
We’re all familiar with the popular Mexican Margarita cocktail – a lime-based cocktail using tequila, lime and orange liqueur. Well, a Prosecco Margarita takes the classic recipe and adds some sparkle by topping off the glass with Prosecco. It’s refreshing, fizzy and fun.
What is the best tequila for a Prosecco Margarita?
White tequila, also known as blanco tequila, is the tequila most commonly used for making margaritas. Blanco tequila is unaged tequila that has spent less than 2 months in either steel casks or neutral oak barrels. This gives it the sharpest taste out of all the tequila types. By comparison, añejo tequila is aged for 1-3 years in oak barrels, providing a more mellow, oaky flavour and golden colour. For this recipe, since it’s nice to taste a little of the Prosecco, I prefer to use a blanco tequila. However, if you’re a die-hard aged-tequila fan, by all means bring out the good stuff. I have written a separate article on my sister site, Indiana Jo, all about choosing good tequila. I’ve also got a list of Tequila Cocktail Recipes.
Serving Suggestions
Here are some tips for improving or tweaking your cocktail:
- If you want to reduce the alcohol, you can leave out the Cointreau or Triple Sec. If you want to re-balance the sweetness against the lime, add a little more syrup.
- While a home-made simple syrup (sugar dissolved in water), is usually the best option for cocktails, in this case I recommend adding a dash of shop-bought agave syrup. Agave syrup is made from the same agave plant that’s used for creating tequila so it’s the perfect match for your Prosecco Margarita.
- Freshly squeezed lime juice is always the best. You can make it in advance and store in the fridge for a day.
- Margaritas are an easy drink to make in bulk and are therefore one of the best cocktails for a crowd. Just make sure you add the Prosecco as you serve each glass to keep the sparkle alive.
